Iceland is at the forefront of geothermal development worldwide. Our energy and natural resources department, Elements of BBA//Fjeldco, advises governments, inter-governmental agencies, and development banks on regulatory aspects of geothermal energy as well as some of the leading geothermal development companies in countries all over the world.

Our project advisory scope extends to securing the legal environment for geothermal research, advising on Power Purchase Agreements and Project Agreements, and dealing with governments and energy authorities concerning licenses, feasibility studies, exploration drilling, construction of facilities, and more.

Elements by BBA//Fjeldco also advises public sector clients, private developers and power producers on legal and regulatory aspects of other renewable energy projects in various sectors including solar, wind and hydropower, heating and cooling, CCUS and transports.

BBA//Fjeldco has helped review and draft laws and regulations in Iceland, France, Turkey, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, El Salvador, Honduras and the Comoros Islands, as well as participating in international research and development projects related to renewable energy. Also, in cooperation with several first-class law firms in the world, we have created the Geothermal Transparency Guide, which provides an overview of the geothermal regulatory framework in 17 countries. This guide is currently being updated to cover other renewable energy sources, and we plan to include up to 40 countries in the updated version.
